Your energy explained

We hear you - between the acronyms, confusing bills and fluctuating energy market it can be difficult to understand what it all means for you. But a good grasp of the basics can help you make smart energy choices and save you big.

Energy 101

In Alberta, we have what's referred to as a deregulated electricity and gas market, which means that you have the freedom to choose an energy retailer for your utilities.

Those who do not have a contract with a competitive retailer are automatically placed on the Rate of Last Resort (RoLR), formerly known as the Regulated Rate Option (RRO).

The RoLR replaces the fluctuating month-to-month RRO rate. It’s designed to give households stability, but it’s also considered a default or “last resort” rate. For some Albertans, EPCOR Energy Alberta is the RoLR energy supply provider and the rate they receive is based on the fixed rate that has been reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission. The average RoLR  from January 1, 2025 until December 31, 2026 is 12.03 cents/kWh.

Many Albertans are unaware that they have options to switch to a competitive plan that could offer more benefits, like lower rates and additional perks.

The RoLR is:
  • A rate Albertan's pay if they're not on a competitive energy plan or contract.
  • A rate that is reviewed and approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission.

What’s the difference between EPCOR and Encor?

We’re glad you asked! EPCOR offers consumers two utility service options: Encor (the competitive rate option) and EPCOR Energy Alberta (the Rate of Last Resort provider or RoLR). Although both energy retailers are part of the same parent company, Encor provides both fixed and floating rates (variable rates) for electricity and natural gas with plans that you’re not locked into and that you can cancel anytime without penalty. Plus Encor customers who want to reduce their carbon footprint can choose to add a 15-100% renewable electricity option to their energy plan.

The choice is yours

While the RoLR provides regulated electricity supply, customers in Alberta have additional choices when it comes to their energy plans. These choices allow customers to explore competitive offers from retailers like Encor, where they can tailor their plan to meet their home or business's specific needs. You can get the same energy at a better rate.

How do I know if I'm on the RoLR or a Competitive Energy Plan?

Many people don't know that they are on the RoLR, and don’t realize they could be getting the same energy at a lower rate by making the switch to Encor by EPCOR.

To confirm what rate you're on, look at your bill, you will see the terms “Rate of Last Resort” or “RoLR.” You can also compare your rate to the current RoLR to see if they match.
