Indigenous relations

EPCOR respects and collaborates with Indigenous communities across Canada and the U.S., focusing on reconciliation, cultural awareness, and supporting Indigenous-owned businesses.

EPCOR operates in areas near or within Treaty territories and Indigenous peoples’ traditional lands in Canada and the United States. We respect the histories, languages and cultures of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and all Indigenous peoples. Their presence enriches the vibrant communities where we live and work.

Within our Canadian operations, we work closely with:

  • Indigenous Nations, communities and representative organizations
  • Indigenous non-profit organizations and other partners, including those that serve Indigenous peoples
  • Indigenous-owned businesses

As we build trusting relationships, we want to understand Indigenous peoples’ perspectives on our work. We’re finding opportunities to collaborate and realize mutual benefit.

Our commitment in action

EPCOR is on a journey of reconciliation. We have a formal commitment to work with Indigenous peoples:

Consultation and engagement

EPCOR benefits when we engage Indigenous peoples. We know our operations and projects might impact Aboriginal and Treaty rights and cultural heritage. So, we work with more than 30 Indigenous Nations, communities, and representative organizations to:

  • Understand Indigenous perspectives on our projects and their potential impacts.
  • Undertake archeological monitoring through our Indigenous Monitoring Program.
  • Manage culturally significant resources through our Archaeological Finds Plan.
  • Bring ceremony and Indigenous perspectives to our facilities. This includes the Traditional Ecological Knowledge Working Group and Indigenous art and interpretive elements.

Community economic development and business

We work with and are increasing the number of Indigenous-owned businesses in our supply chains through our Indigenous Procurement Strategy. Eligible, Indigenous-owned businesses can register in EPCOR’s Indigenous vendor database.

Community investment and education

Through our Community Investment program, EPCOR invests in Indigenous communities, organizations, and initiatives. We focus on organizations that support Indigenous students and youth and their educational journeys.

Welcoming workplaces

EPCOR aims to be a welcoming place to work and an employer of choice for Indigenous peoples through:

  • The SPIRIT (Supporting People in Reconciliation of Indigenous Truths) Employee Resource Group.
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training across our workforce.
  • Spaces for Indigenous ceremonial practice at our facilities, like the Interpretive Space at the kîsikâw pîsim solar farm.
  • Observance in our workplaces:
    • National Indigenous History Month (June)
    • National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21)
    • National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30)
