Environment and sustainability

Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada

Every year since 2018, we have placed among the ​Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canadaopens in a new tab, according to Corporate Knights.

2021 Clean50 - Top Project

We received a 2021 Clean50 - Top Projectopens in a new tab award for our Stormwater Integrated Resource Plan (SIRP), recognizing this community flood protection program as innovative and cost-effective. 

Emerald Award - Finalist

In 2021, the WaterSHED (Water: Saskatchewan Headwaters, Edmonton and Downstream) Monitoring Program — a partnership between EPCOR, the City of Edmonton and North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance — was recognised as a finalist for an Emerald Awardopens in a new tab by the Alberta Emerald Foundation. WaterSHEDopens in a new tab is one of Alberta’s most extensive paired water quality monitoring and flow tributary monitoring programs, with 19 stationsopens in a new tab through the basin.

EnviroVista Champion Status

In 2011, our Edmonton waterworks system became the first water utility to achieve Government of Alberta EnviroVista Champion Statusopens in a new tab. Under the program, we commit to environmental initiatives that exceed required operating standards.

Community

United Way's Leading Way award

At EPCOR, we are deeply inspired by the communities where we operate. We believe we have a responsibility to make sure those communities remain vibrant. We provide $1 million in community support every year. Since 2020, we have committed $3.5 million to support charities and community groups during the COVID pandemic. In 2020, our employees raised more than $570,000 in support of United Way, earning the United Way’s Leading the Way award.​

Canadian Council of Aboriginal Business - Committed status and Aboriginal Procurement Champion

As a company whose work takes place on the territory and traditional lands of many Indigenous Peoples, we are committed to ensuring that the participation, perspective and traditions of Indigenous Peoples are respected a​nd valued in our business. In 2022, we achieved Committed status with Canadian Council of Aboriginal Businessopens in a new tab and are also registered with the council as an Aboriginal Procurement Champion.

Safety and operational excellence

Voluntary Protection Program - Star

In 2022 and 2021, we achieved a Star level as part of the Voluntary Protection Program with the Arizona Division of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The VPP is the highest federal recognition for workplace safety in the U.S.

Healthy Arizona Worksite Gold Award

​In 2022, we earned our third Healthy Arizona Worksite Gold Award​ from the Arizona Department of Health Services, recognizing us for our commitment to the health and wellbeing of our team members, their families and the community. 

American Gas Association's Safety Achievement Award

We received the American Gas Association’s 2022 Safety Achievement Award for surpassing industry standards. EPCOR’s natural gas team in Magnolia, Texas, worked more than 34,400 hours that year without recording a single incident and achieved a Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART) rate of zero. 

Arizona Water Association Awards

We received the American Gas Association’s 2022 Safety Achievement Award for surpassing industry standards. EPCOR’s natural gas team in Magnolia, Texas, worked more than 34,400 hours that year without recording a single incident and achieved a Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred (DART) rate of zero. 

Utility of the Future Today

In 2023, we were named once again as a Utility of the Future Today by the Water Environment Federation for our water reclamation work in the U.S. — a designation that lasts until 2026. The Utility of the Future Today program​ also recognised EPCOR for its beneficial use of biosolids at the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant.​

Water Taste Test

Our drinking water has been recognised as some of the most exceptional across North America. In 2019, the American Water Works Association named our drinking water in Edmonton the b​est tasting across North America.

Bentley Year in Infrastructure Award

Also in 2019, EPCOR was recognised in a global infrastructure competition, receiving a Bentley Year in Infrastructure Awardopens in a new tab for its work in​power distribution asset management. ​​

National Awards for Innovation & Excellence

We have formed unique and innovative partnerships across North America to deliver reliable, high-quality drinking water and wastewater services. In 2014, the Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships recognised two of these projects with National Awards for Innovation & Excellence. The Regina Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Project received the Chuck Wills Awardopens in a new tab​, while the Evan Thomas Water and Wastewater Treatment Facility in Kananaskis received an Award of Merit.​

Economic Driver IMPACT Award

In 2017, we received an Economic Driver IMPACT Awardopens in a new tab from the Greater Phoenix Chamber for our Luke 303 Regional Water Reclamation Facility. 

Economic Engine Award

Luke 303 also received the prestigious Economic Engine Awardopens in a new tab in 201​6 from the Western Maricopa Coalition (WESTMARC). Luke 303 continues to expand and will ultimately​ process an anticipated wastewater capacity of up to eight million gallons per day.
