We are hiring a permanent full-time Technologist, Biosolids position working out of Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plan in Edmonton, AB.

The Technologist, Biosolids is accountable for the Nutri-Gold Program. This includes achieving site selection, record keeping/data management, quality control and assurance, public relations with time spans as long as 12 months to complete annual targets & multiple contract management.

 

Biosolids Technologist is accountable to Manager, Biosolids Operations and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by Senior Engineer.

 

What you’d be responsible for

 

  • Achieve company wide goals for Biosolids program by maintaining EPCOR’s relationship with contractors and EWMC operations.
  • Ensure all users are familiar with systems security, safety, and access requirements.
  • Oversee and organize seasonal requirements before and after startup, including issues (i.e., wet weather, droughts, etc.) related to dewatering and hauling.
  • Lead projects for mobile dewatering services, lagoon operations and hauling, report on costs.
  • Contribute to biosolids strategies and plans and participates in the development, review and updating of the Annual Biosolids Management Plan.
  • Assist with the management of a $16 million budget, verify expenditures, and verify completion of work and deliverables.
  • Oversee and organize collaborate approach with ACWRC, including monitor lagoon operations and road access, safety, and conditions to allow on time hauling.
  • Create monthly updates and support internal audits, and compliance with ISO 14001 environmental management system.
  • Meet annual biosolids’ performance targets and provincial regulatory requirements.
  • Meet monthly Client Services performance targets (e.g., quality assurance requirements and response time).
  • Ensure employee and public safety, support a safety-first culture through safety leadership, hazard identification, incident reporting, environmental assessment, and follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Determine and provide advice on response to changing workloads, project demands, regulatory adjustments, and policy shifts.
  • Create reports, debriefing materials, and update the policy and regulation materials regularly to ensure current procedures and processes are followed.
  • Review and approve invoices for Nutri-Gold, Turn-Key and other contracts; assess user experience ad concerns.
  • Liaise with AEP with regards to all biosolids communications and preseason notifications.
  • Maintain and improve ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
  • Coordinate online (and paper) data management reporting, analysis, and tracking, and maintain PBR Matrix, including data entry for PBR Thickened, Dewatered and Arrow Utilities.
  • Conduct monthly inspections and ensure compliance with guidelines for applying biosolids, APG site dewatering, etc.
  • Coordinate mobile dewatering, lagoon operations, hauling schedule, and land application with farmers, contractors, and COE.

 

What’s required to be successful

 

Knowledge/Training/Education:

  • Minimum of two (2) year diploma from recognized college or technical institute.
  • A university degree in environmental sciences, agrology, or biosolids (waste management) would be an asset.
  • Professional membership in good standing with ASET.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience with biosolids management and operations.
    • Candidates who do not meet the minimum 7 years of work experience may be considered for a Developmental Opportunity.
  • Experience using software to manage data and client applications.
  • Have a good understanding and knowledge of biosolids’ processes and procedures, and the Alberta biosolids market.

Technical and Customer Service skills:

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and demonstrated capability working in SharePoint, Microsoft Excel, and Internet navigation.
  • Expert knowledge of biosolids technologies.
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to work with internal and external contacts.
  • Knowledge of complex analytical thinking and sophisticated problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve program needs in a manner that ensures client satisfaction.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others to accomplish biosolid program goals.
  • Ability to focus on safety, operational excellence, continuous improvement and achieving results.
  • Excellent performance, attendance, and schedule adherence.
  • Ability to grasp, apply and communicate new and current program concepts and technologies.

 

As the successful candidate, you will use skills and industry knowledge while coordinating with other departments to solve client escalations. Collaboration with other departments to view issues and follow up with staff and customers. You will also oversee and coordinate peer and client education, awareness, and mentoring. As the ideal candidate, you must possess excellent organizational and time management skills, with a keen attention to detail and high standards for quality. An additional skill for this position is displaying patience and ability to work well under pressure created by client needs, multiple work demands, and time constraints.
