The Meter Technician 3 is accountable to support the growth, sustainment and ongoing management of EPCOR’s electric meter population and AMI Network (Advanced Metering Infrastructure).  In the role of Meter Technician 3, you will leverage applied work experience combined with a comprehensive knowledge of Meter Lab Operations to fulfill the expectations of your role.  Core responsibilities include the ongoing maintenance and assurance of test equipment / environments, ability to process the full complement of EPCOR’s electric meter population as well as contributing to strategic initiatives / projects required to support the continued evolution of our AMI Network. 

All activities will be performed while adhering to Safe Work Practices, our Quality Management System, associated processes and procedures as well as in strict accordance with Measurement Canada Standards. 

The Meter Technician 3 is accountable to the Foreman, Meter Lab and the S2 Manager, Advanced Metering Infrastructure and operates within the context and prescribed limits established by the S2 Manager.

What You’d be responsible for

  • Inspect, service and verify meters as outlined by Measurement Canada Standards and the Meter Operations Quality Management System – AMI, Substation and 3rd Party meters
  • Conduct Test Console certification and annual accuracy testing
  • Oversight and fulfillment of activities outlined within the annual meter compliance sample program
  • Identify, log and define corrective actions for non-conformances as outlined within the Meter Operations Quality Management System
  • Conduct advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis and applied resolution of AMI meter issues (ex: communication, program, metrology, functionality)
  • Complete the evaluation, testing and standardization of Smart Meter firmware and net new metering devices
  • Design, build and maintain the Meter Lab test environments
  • Provide technical support required to evaluate and standardize Field Area Network devices – Collectors, Network Gateways, Routers, etc.
  • Actively participate in both internal and external audits related to Measurement Canada’s Accreditation program
  • Demonstrate the ability to work safely, independently and effectively in a high performance team environment where initiative, adaptability, organizational skills and a drive toward continuous improvement are behaviours instrumental to the success of Meter Lab Operations
  • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of all relevant Measurement Canada Standards as well as details outlined within the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.

What’s required to be successful

  • Grade 12 diploma, mandatory
  • 5 or more years of experience as a Journeyman Electrician
  • Completion of an electrical, instrumentation or electronics technology diploma from a recognized technical Institute is a strong asset 
  • Minimum 5 year’s experience working in a Meter Lab / Shop environment
  • Sign-off as an approved Meter Verifier with Measurement Canada on self-contained / transformer rated meter forms will be required in this role
  • Comprehensive understanding of all Measurement Canada Standards
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of an AMI System (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) inclusive of metering endpoints, field area network devices, basic RF Mesh functionality and cellular communications
  • Working knowledge / demonstrated proficiency using MS Office Outlook, Excel, Word, Power BI and Visio is critical to meeting expectations of role
  • General computer proficiency along with the ability to learn / use proprietary software applications is key to task fulfillment – Command Centre, STARs, Geo-FIT, Oracle, Ivara, etc.
  • Strong commitment and comprehension of relevant EPCOR safe work practices, policies and procedures is required
  • Ability to utilize electric multi meters and or similar devices used for the diagnosis and confirmation of electrical functionality
  • Must be able to use various hand tools – manual and power assist
  • Familiarity with electrical connections, meters and associated standards
  • Utilization of Test Consoles and Desktop Meter Stations are essential to role
