The 99 Avenue sanitary sewer conveys wastewater from west Edmonton to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. The sewer is approximately 30 metres deep and services approximately 117,000 customers. Inspections have identified the existing trunk varies from fair to very poor condition and requires rehabilitation between 142 Street and 151 Street to ensure it continues to meet the current needs and growth for west Edmonton.
This project has been broken down into two stages:
The existing 99 Avenue sanitary trunk line that services over 100,000 customers needs to be replaced. This project will be completed in 2 stages, starting in July 2020 and we estimate the project will be finished by the end of 2024. In Stage One, we are building a new tunnel along 99 Avenue, north on 148 Street and east on 101 Avenue. In Stage Two, we'll rehabilitate the existing tunnel on 99 Avenue. Once our work in done, both tunnels will be in service, increasing capacity in the trunk network.
About the 99 Avenue sanitary sewer
As seen by the map below, the 99 Avenue sanitary sewer moves wastewater from west Edmonton to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant. The sewer is approximately 30 metres deep and services about 117,000 customers. For this project, the sewer needs rehabilitation between 142 Street and 151 Street.
This trunk line was built in 1975 and inspections have shown the existing trunk varies from fair to very poor condition. The existing trunk needs rehabilitation to ensure it continues to meet the current needs and growth for west Edmonton.
Current condition
Below is an example of the current tunnel in very poor condition in contrast to an image of what a tunnel should look like.
Stage One of this project is the construction of the new bypass tunnel (started in July 2020). Construction of the bypass tunnel is now complete.
During Stage Two work, crews are rehabilitating the tunnel by installing a tunnel liner in the deteriorated section of the tunnel underneath 99 Avenue from 150 Street to 142 Street (in progress).
This project will be completed in 2 stages; work started in July 2020 on Stage One and we estimate the entire project will be finished in Q1 2025.
Stage One timeline
Stage One work began in July 2020 and is now complete.
Stage Two timeline
Stage Two of the project is now underway and is anticipated to be completed in Q1 2025.
While we always do our best to plan construction and abide by construction timelines communicated to the public, unexpected events can occur, which may delay the schedule.
Please note, these timelines are estimates and are pending approvals, material procurement/availability, construction conditions and weather.
To try to understand and reduce the construction impacts to the public, we've met with the Grovenor Community League, the Crestwood Community League, the West Jasper Place Community League, the Candy Cane Lane Committee, St. Andrew's Church and several other organizations that will be impacted by the work.
While we complete this work, you can expect to see activity that's typical to construction, including company/ contractor vehicles and equipment in your neighbourhood.
The Haul Route is the system of roads between a worksite and the nearest major intersection that construction vehicles will take when entering and exiting the worksite.
During this work, you'll see heavy traffic along the haul routes.
We'll also be working on different rehabilitation projects in the same area, during the same time. Find out how this work impacts the 99 Avenue project.
151 Street South Sanitary Trunk Rehabilitation Project
The 151 Street South Sanitary Trunk Rehabilitation Project is another project planned in the area to rehabilitate the existing trunk line. Inspections of the existing trunk line along 151 Street have been completed. The project is in the design stage and more information will be provided to community members as the project advances.
MacKinnon Ravine Trunk Rehabilitation Project
Inspections have identified the existing trunk line underneath MacKinnon Ravine is in poor condition and requires rehabilitation. The project is in the design stage and more information will be provided to community members as the project advances.
