Dome substation

EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electric transmission and distribution system in Edmonton. Part of this system includes substations, which convert electricity from higher voltage power lines (transmission lines) to lower voltages that can be distributed to homes and businesses in the area. We currently have three projects planned at the Dome substation located at 2720 Parson Road: the Dome substation reactor addition, drainage and building addition project.

Project area

Please note work areas may change due to weather or ground conditions.

Dome reactor addition

The addition of the Dome reactor project involves installation of a new 15 kV reactor and connection to the to the new distribution feeder. A reactor is a piece of equipment in the substation that keeps the current flowing in a safe and controlled level. Additionally, a new single duct, approximately 90 meters long, will be constructed to connect the equipment.

This project is required to ensure that we can continue to provide safe and reliable power service to area residents and businesses.

Construction is expected to begin in spring 2025 and be completed by fall 2025.

Dome drainage

Currently, when it rains, water levels exceed acceptable levels within the Dome substation. The planned utility work will construct a low impact development (LID) storage facility for rainwater and runoff to be directed into. The storage of runoff from Dome substation also frees up capacity in the local sewer system to convey runoff from heavy rainfall events. The stored runoff is released back into the sewer system as capacity becomes available.

Construction is expected to start summer 2025 and be completed by fall 2025.

Dome building addition project

A new building is required to house electrical equipment at the Dome substation. The new building will be similar to the existing building in colour, and be approximately 14 metres by 4.7 metres.

Construction is expected to start in summer 2025 and be completed by fall/winter 2025.

What to expect during construction

Depending on the work location, residents and businesses can expect to see activity that is typical to construction, including company/contractor vehicles and equipment. The construction area will be fenced and/or marked as a restricted area. Work hours will be Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Traffic

No public road closures are expected.

Power outages

Power outages will not be required to complete these projects.

Noise control

The proposed work will create typical noise associated with construction. We will take measures to ensure we comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it’s necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to receive the necessary permits. Any required landscaping will be completed when weather permits.
