EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electric transmission and distribution system in Edmonton. Part of this system includes substations, which convert electricity from higher voltage power lines (transmission lines) to lower voltages that can be safely distributed to homes and businesses in the area.
Electrical system upgrades are required at the East Industrial Substation, located at 2620 76 Avenue NW in Edmonton. This summer, EPCOR is planning to build an additional room which will create space for new electrical equipment.
In 2024, EPCOR is planning to expand the East Industrial Substation by adding an equipment room. The room will store protective relays which help ensure the electricity moving through the substation continues to be safe and reliable. Our original timelines saw this project starting in summer 2023, the project was delayed and started in February 2024. It will be finished in Winter 2025.
This building addition will be on the north side of the substation and be approximately 50 square meters, a 7-meter by 7-meter square room.
The room will be one floor and does not include a basement. This work will be completed within the existing fence line of the substation.
Construction started in February 2024 and will finish in winter 2025, weather permitting. This work will take approximately a year to complete. The typical hours of construction will be 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
To reduce visual impacts, this expansion will have a consistent exterior style to the existing building. Construction work on the expansion will occur within the substation fence line.
Residents and businesses can expect to see activity that is typical to construction, including company/contractor vehicles and equipment. To complete this work, EPCOR will use a generator and have a construction trailer on site.
This project may be noisy at times. We will comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.
No power outages are planned as part of this project.
There are minimal traffic and pedestrian impacts as this work will take place within the substation fence line. Businesses and residents may see an increase of EPCOR or contractor vehicles or construction equipment in the area while construction is happening.
The construction area will be fenced and/or marked as a restricted area. We will take every precaution to ensure public safety. We also need your assistance in keeping a safe distance from the construction sites and the equipment.

Alberta’s electric utilities are regulated by the AUC. The AUC is an independent quasi-judicial agency that ensures that the delivery of Alberta’s utility service takes place in a manner that is fair, responsible and in the public’s interest. EPCOR’s electricity projects must be approved by the AUC before construction can begin. For more information about the AUC, please visit the AUC’s website.
