Garneau substation

EPCOR is responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the electric transmission and distribution system in Edmonton.

Part of this system includes substations, which convert electricity from higher voltage power lines (transmission lines) to lower voltages that can be safely distributed to homes and businesses in the area.

The Garneau Substation is located at 11123 85 Avenue NW. EPCOR is in the final stages of upgrading the electrical equipment and building at the Garneau Substation.

Project overview

Project background

Current projects:

These projects are expected to be finished by fall 2024. After this work is completed, EPCOR will restore the site to its original condition.

  • Transformer maintenance work
  • Installing crushed rock throughout the substation area
  • Building sound enclosures around the transformers
  • Building a permanent fence at the back alley

Completed projects:

Since 2020, EPCOR has completed significant upgrades to the Garneau Substation.

  • The substation yard was expanded to accommodate the location of the new transformer and new indoor electrical equipment. This involved removing the EPCOR-owned house directly west of the substation and expanding the fence line.
  • Three transformers have been replaced and energized at the substation.
  • A new building was constructed to accommodate the new electrical equipment. This was built directly west of the substation.
  • EPCOR replaced the existing six-foot fence with a new eight-foot fence improve security around the substation.
Schedule

The upgrades to the Garneau Substation are expected to be finished in fall 2024. Work hours are Monday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional Sundays from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Traffic impacts

To safely complete this work, EPCOR may need to periodically close the alley directly behind the substation. We will work to keep alley closures as minimal as possible throughout the rest of construction.

When closed, pedestrian and vehicle traffic will not be able to pass through the alley, but access to parking and parking garages in the alley will be maintained on either side of the substation. Residents and visitors to the area will need to use either 112 Street or 111 Street to access the back alley.

Power outages

No power outages are anticipated as part of this work.

Construction equipment

Residents will experience noise typical to construction as various equipment and trucks are used for this work. Vehicles on site include EPCOR and contractor vehicles, fork trucks and flatbed trailers.

Noise

This project may be noisy at times. We will comply with the City of Edmonton’s Community Standards Bylaw for Noise Control. If it is necessary to temporarily exceed acceptable noise levels, we will work with the City of Edmonton to obtain the necessary permits.

Workspace

All work areas will be safe and secure. All construction activities will be in accordance with the City of Edmonton bylaws, Occupational Health & Safety requirements, and EPCOR’s strict health, safety and environment procedures and guidelines.

Questions?

We're committed to minimizing construction impacts where possible while we work in the community.
